Do you love to write? Are you looking for an opportunity to showcase your writing? If so, submit your original short stories, song lyrics, poetry, photography, or artwork for possible publication in Bethel’s literary magazine, Polaris. Email all submissions to tsulmen@hampton.k12.va.us.

The literary magazine is taking submissions for the 2021-2022 school year! This year’s issue is titled Agathocaco. The word “agathocaco” means “composed of good and evil.” As such, we are looking for stories, poems, original song lyrics, and more that revolve around the theme of “the combination of good and evil.”

The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2022!

The EEL Summer Business Institute (2021)

Looking for something fun to do this summer? Then look no further! The Extended Enrichment Learning (EEL) has a great opportunity for rising 11th and 12th graders to explore their academy choice from a real life perspective. 🙂

The Summer Business Institute (SBI) is back this summer with exciting activities, business challenges, and fun field trips! The SBI is offering recovery and credit advancement opportunities and a chance to engage in some exciting real world challenges related to your academy. Extra Credit | Boyer & Sykes

Help the Media Arts and Design (MAD) Academy welcome guest speakers Hampton Boyer and Travis Sykes during our next MAD Live! on Friday, May 21, 2021, at 12:00 pm. 

MAD Live! will be an interactive Q & A session open to all students interested in learning more about Hampton Boyer and Travis Sykes and their role as multimedia artists. Please join us! All are welcome.

Brief Biography:

Hampton Boyer

Hampton Boyer is a figurative painter working in Norfolk, Virginia. A self-taught artist, Boyer creates graphics, paintings, and murals. He has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions. In 2014, Boyer co-founded 670 Gallery in Hampton, Virginia. While there, he served as Creative Director until 2017. Boyer currently works as an advisor, curator, and business developer for The Contemporary Arts Network (CAN). The CAN serves as advisors for corporations and private individuals in the coastal region and beyond.

Hampton Boyer has spent much of his life in and around Hampton Roads. Layers of bright, clear colors and geometric forms with complex texture and composition make his work bold, graphic and arresting. Inspiration and influence come to Boyer from many sources: street art, graphic novels, music, contemporary artists, and art history.

Travis Sykes

Carbon Studio’s house engineer and producer, Travis Sykes is a musician and producer based in Hampton, Virginia. As a teenager, Sykes was a member of local bands, playing gigs for large crowds throughout Hampton Roads. While at Bethel High School, he led one such band to several national competition championships. He went on to attend Berklee College of Music where he studied Songwriting and Production.

In 2016 he became the touring bassist for New York rock veterans, Glassjaw, and participated in their national and international tours until 2019. Sykes currently leads the CAN music department and is the house engineer and producer of Carbon Studios at The Contemporary Arts Network Headquarters in Newport News, VA.

Brief Biography:

Kendrick Hopkins Jr, Multimedia Producer at WHRO, is a 6x Capital Emmy award winner, 14x Telly Award Winner, & recipient of the Inside Business Forty Under 40 award in 2016. During his time at WHRO, Hopkins has worked on projects such as The Scene, Curate 757, & American Evolution, while also directing the Goode Family Foundation documentary series which includes Comedy Bootcamp: The Documentary, #YoungSingersProject, Dancing on the Shoulders of Giants & City Voices: Homelessness to Hopefulness. In his time outside of work, Hopkins runs the Mark Edwin Lee UNC Basketball Camp Scholarship and enjoys spending time with his family.

Summer Internship w/ the ELA Department!

The ELA department, in collaboration with the office of Innovation and Professional Learning, is excited to provide a unique opportunity for students this summer! They are hiring three high school students to review and provide feedback on the high school English curriculum. These are paid positions!

Students will be required to attend two half-days of training (June 28 and 29) and to review and provide feedback Mon.-Thurs., again for half-days, July 12-30.

Information for SOLs (2021)

Non-Writing SOL tests will be May 24-27, 2021.

 

Only students who are currently enrolled in an SOL test-related subject, whether attending in-person or virtual, and identified students needing to retake an SOL, will report to school on designated testing days. Students who are not scheduled to test will remain at home and participate asynchronously. A testing schedule is posted below for your convenience.

*Only students scheduled to take an SOL test will report to school on the dates above.

SOL Checklist:

  • Bring your school issued Chromebook fully charged.
  • Wear a mask.
  • A bottle of water (water fountains will not be accessible).
  • Optional: Pack a lunch if you do not prefer a school provided meal.
  • Register for testing by April 30, 2021 if you are a student on the 100% virtual learning model. Please use this link (Virtual Student Registration) to register for testing and to indicate if transportation is required. (In-person learners are not required to register as the test is being administered on regularly scheduled school days.)
  • For bus stop pick-up and drop-off locations and times, please click here.
  • Have a parent/guardian complete a Student Health Assessment Questionnaire for each day that you are required to take a SOL on campus.
  • Leave your cell phone and/or electronics such as Apple watches and AirPods at home or be prepared to give them to the test administrator.
