Personal Statement

“Education must not simply teach work – it must teach Life.” ~W. E. B. Du Bois

The purpose of “The Hill Affect” is to showcase teaching excellence, reveal a clearer mission and vision of my high school classroom, and to foster better communication throughout the school year.

The naming of this website is a play on words with the concept of the “butterfly effect.” However, my role and intentionality, as a teacher, is far less benign and accidental; I teach purposefully. Hence, the use of the verb “affect” instead of the noun “effect.” In the classroom, I am a powerful agent of change and influence on my students and I wanted this website to reflect that role and responsibility; I do not take it lightly.

Teaching is my life’s work. Yes, I teach students how to read and write better, but what I actually do is so much bigger than merely teaching English. The biggest misconception about my class is that it is just an English course when it is so much more.

While change does not happen overnight, I hope I can make the process of learning much more transparent and lasting. In the classroom, I aspire to create a legacy of empowerment. Out of my persistence, much like the birth of stalactites and stalagmites, I hope something beautiful is born. Whether you are a parent, student, administrator, teacher, or visitor, thank you for taking this journey with me. 🙂

Sincerely,

Dr. Natashia J. Hill
